THE IMPORTANCE OF WEAVING AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS
The Philippines cultural heritage is rich and undeniably unique. It is generally a mixture of our own indigenous culture intertwined with those of our colonizers. Our archipelago is divided into several regions one of which is Ilocos with a well preserved heritage. This includes the production of Abel Iloco, which takes unique designs and colors into account aside from just simple weaving. This rigorous craft is a combination of the weaver’s eye for the intricate design and their inventiveness on the techniques of counting thread in the weaving process.
Our culture and traditions form our identities and contribute to the vibrant variety of human life. In order to keep it alive, we must bring cultural preservation into light. It provides Filipinos a sense of unity and belonging. This mostly relies on our forefathers to pass on cultural heritage to the new generation. This is currently at risk today due to busy, modern lifestyles and social responsibilities. Despite this, cultural heritage is a constitutional right that we should protect.
The Art of Weaving: Services
Magdalena Gamayo
“Even if we only earn a small amount of money, the most important, is to showcase and preserve this rich culture of the Ilocanos,”
The Art of Weaving: Quote
Preserving tradition was held into so much value by Magdalena Gamayo and by doing this, she contributes a great deal in preserving our culture. She spends her life honoring God for her talent and passing on her skills to the younger generation of weavers. The small group that she tutors include her neighbors, her cousin's daughter-in-law, and her cousin's daughter. Lola Magdalena knows there are more who wish to learn her methods and technique which is why government support is crucial. While she continues giving lectures and personalized tutorials on the Iluko way of weaving, Lola Magdalena highlights the need for patience and passion. As adults, we also have a responsibility for keeping and supporting our traditions. We can always practice, spread awareness, and purchase local products. Hopefully, these will be passed onto the younger generation while we continue to do our part in preserving the rich culture we have.
